Description

Propoxur 97% TC is a high-purity carbamate insecticide widely used for controlling a broad spectrum of insect pests in agriculture, public health, and structural pest control. It is effective against mosquitoes, cockroaches, flies, fleas, ticks, aphids, and various other sucking and chewing insects.

The compound functions as a contact and stomach poison and is known for its rapid knockdown and residual activity. Propoxur is commonly formulated into sprays, powders, aerosols, and baits. The 97% technical concentrate is the raw material used for manufacturing various end-use formulations.

Mode of Action

Propoxur acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor by reversibly binding to the active site of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an essential enzyme for nerve function in insects. This inhibition results in the accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve synapses, causing continuous nerve impulse transmission, leading to paralysis and death of the insect.

Its rapid knockdown effect and broad spectrum make it suitable for indoor pest control, agricultural pest management, and vector control programs.

Applications

  • Target Pests: Mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, fleas, ticks, aphids, whiteflies, leafhoppers, and other pests

  • Use Areas: Public health (vector control), agriculture (vegetables, cotton, cereals), household pest control, stored products

  • Formulation Types: Emulsifiable concentrates, wettable powders, aerosols, baits

  • Application Rates:

    • Agricultural crops: Typically 0.1–0.2 kg a.i./ha

    • Public health: As per recommended dosage for space sprays and residual sprays

Toxicology & Safety

  • Oral LD₅₀ (rat): 84–200 mg/kg (moderately toxic)

  • Dermal LD₅₀ (rat): >2000 mg/kg

  • Inhalation LC₅₀ (rat, 4h): 1.3 mg/L

  • Skin and Eye Irritation: Mild irritant

  • Carcinogenicity: Not classified as carcinogenic by major regulatory agencies

  • Environmental Impact: Toxic to aquatic organisms and bees; avoid contamination of water bodies
