Description:

Azamethiphos 95% TC is a high-purity organophosphorus insecticide used predominantly in veterinary and public health applications. Originally developed for controlling flies and other ectoparasites in livestock environments, it is also extensively used in aquaculture, especially for controlling sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on farmed fish, such as Atlantic salmon.

Azamethiphos is one of the few organophosphates approved for use in aquatic environments due to its effectiveness and rapid breakdown. It works primarily as a stomach and contact poison, interfering with the nervous system of insects and ectoparasites. The technical concentrate is used to formulate various end-use products including wettable powders (WP), soluble powders (SP), baits (RB), and immersion treatments for aquaculture.

Physical and Chemical Properties:

  • Appearance: Pale yellow to off-white crystalline powder

  • Odor: Slight chemical odor

  • Melting Point: 88–94°C

  • Boiling Point: Decomposes before boiling

  • Solubility: Slightly soluble in water (~1.2 g/L at 20°C); soluble in acetone, ethanol, and methanol

  • Stability: Stable under dry, cool conditions. Hydrolyzes in alkaline and aqueous environments.

  • Vapor Pressure: Very low (non-volatile under normal conditions)

  • Flash Point: Not applicable (solid)

Specification Parameters:

  • Active Ingredient (Azamethiphos): ≥95.0%

  • Water Content: ≤0.5%

  • Acidity (as H₂SO₄): ≤0.3%

  • Insoluble Matter in Acetone: ≤0.5%

  • Appearance: Free-flowing crystalline solid

Applications:

Target Pests:

  • House flies (Musca domestica)

  • Stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans)

  • Sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis, Caligus elongatus)

  • Other parasitic flies and insects in livestock environments

Use Areas:

  • Livestock housing: cattle barns, poultry houses, pig farms

  • Aquaculture: sea lice control in fish farming

  • Public health: waste management facilities, food storage sites

Formulated Products:

  • 1% and 10% baits

  • 50% WP or SP

  • 500 mg/L aqueous treatments for aquaculture

  • Coated bait granules and fly strips

Mode of Action:

Azamethiphos inhibits acetylcholinesterase, an essential enzyme for nerve signal transmission in insects and parasites. By blocking the breakdown of acetylcholine, nerve impulses remain active, causing convulsions, paralysis, and eventual death of the pest. The compound acts through contact and ingestion.

Toxicological Profile:

  • Oral LD₅₀ (rat): 1100–1200 mg/kg (moderate toxicity)

  • Dermal LD₅₀ (rat): >2000 mg/kg

  • Inhalation LC₅₀ (rat, 4h): >2.1 mg/L

  • Skin Irritation: Slight to non-irritating

  • Eye Irritation: Mildly irritating

  • Sensitization: Not a skin sensitizer

  • Environmental Hazards: Toxic to aquatic organisms and bees — follow environmental safety guidelines

Packaging and Storage:

  • Standard Packaging: 25 kg fiber drums with inner polyethylene liner or custom packaging as per client needs

  • Storage Conditions: Store in a dry, cool, well-ventilated area. Keep away from moisture, acids, and strong alkalis.

  • Shelf Life: Minimum 2 years under proper storage conditions
